KMS Client Cache

I came across an issue where one of our AD/DNS Servers inherited a .srv record (dont know how) to advertise that it was a KMS server. We provisioned some Server 2012R2 servers and couldnt activate. The error on the logs was:
License Activation (slui.exe) failed with the following error code:
hr=0xC004F038

This error code means that the KMS server doesnt have enough activations on it to activate further clients.. In order to recitify our issue, firstly deleted the .srv txt key on the DNS server that was advertising the wrong KMS key, then used clear KMS host command, not sure if needed a reboot, I did anyways since it was a non-production, vanilla install.

I found some handy commands that will enable you to flush the cache on a KMS Client.
Useful KMS and Windows activation commands:
Change Windows 2008 R2 license key type from Retail to KMS activated:
Slmgr /ipk 489J6-VHDMP-X63PK-3K798-CPX3Y
Clear cached KMS host:
Slmgr.vbs /ckms
Disable KMS host caching:
Slmgr.vbs /ckhc
Flush local system DNS cache:
Slmgr.vbs /flushdns
Force immediate activation:
Slmgr.vbs /ato
Enable KMS Host caching:
Slmgr.vbs /skhc
Point activation to a specific KMS Server (disables KMS autodiscovery via DNS):
Slmgr.vbs /skms:SERVER
Display detailed license information (& KMS Host Info):
Slmgr.vbs /dlv
Get information about OS activation from KMS Server:
slmgr.vbs / dli
Configure a server to run KMS:
Install the KMS activation key by running the following:
slmgr.vbs /ipk
Run the following command to immediately activate:
slmgr.vbs /ato
Restart the Software Licensing Service (SPPSVC):
net stop sppsvc && net start sppsvc
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff793407.aspx
The Software Licensing Service (SPPSVC) handles registration of the DNS service (sRV) record which is created in the same DNS domain the KMS host is installed uder the _tcp subzone.
KMS will automatically handle activations for systems in the same DNS Domain. In order to expand the scope to other domains, a registry hack is required.
Open Regedit and navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
Create a new Multi-String key called DnsDomainPublishList
Edit the key and add each additional DNS domain suffic that KMS should publish to on a separate line.
Restart the Software Licensing Service (SPPSVC):
net stop sppsvc && net start sppsvc
If Dynamic DNS is not enabled for your AD domain, you will have to manually add the SRV record for KMS with ths following information:
Service: _VLMCS
Protocol: _TCP
Port Number: 1688
Host:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff793405.aspx
Note: Only the first KMS Host can create an SRV record – subsequent KMS Hosts cannot change or update SRV records unless the default DNS permissions are modified.
Configuring KMS Clients:
Manually specify a KMS Host:
slmgr.vbs /skms : NOTE: When you manually specify a KMS host, this disables automatic discovery of the KMS host.
Enable Auto-discovery:
slmgr.vbs /ckms
Change a client from retail to volume activation:
Slmgr.vbs /ipk
Change a client registered with a MAK key to KMS:
slmgr.vbs /ipk

get avatars back in google chrome to swtich user profiles the old way

I found this link that helped me get back the old one click way of changing profiles. Thanks to Justin Meyers post on wonderhowto website

Recap here ( i take no credit for this info):

How to Switch Back to the Old Avatar Menu
If you like the old profile management avatar menu like I do, it’s easy to switch back using the Chrome Flags menu. Just go to chrome://flags/#enable-new-avatar-menu, disable the feature, and relaunch Chrome. Alternatively, you can do the following:

Visit chrome://flags in the URL address box
Search for “Enable the new avatar menu”
Switch from “Default” to “Disabled”
Hit the “Relaunch Now” button

installing nitotv ssh apple tv 2

I just wanted to put this information out there, since I couldn’t find it anywhere…

If you’re just wanting to use SeasonPass for a jailbreak, and do not plan on installing aTV Flash, you’ll need help installed NitoTV.

First off, get the IP Address of your AppleTV from the Settings Menu.

SSH from your machine to that IP as root (password: alpine) — If you don’t know what SSH is, google it.
ie from a Mac or Linux terminal type ssh -l root 192.168.1.240

At this point I recommend changing your password. To do this, type passwd

Now, lets update our apt sources…. type apt-get update

and now, to install NitoTV type apt-get install com.nito.nitoTV

Hope this helps.

ddwrt router build 18946 upgrade ssh broken

It seems that as of version 17xxx the guys are DD-WRT switched from OpenSSH to Dropbear. No big deal really, except the SSH keys are not compatible with each other, thus preventing SSH from running.

To fix SSH:

    • Enable Telnet
    • Telnet into your router and run the following commands:
      1. cd /tmp/root/.ssh/
      2. rm authorized_keys
      3. rm ssh_host_dss_key
      4. rm ssh_host_rsa_key
      5. nvram unset sshd_rsa_host_key
      6. nvram commit
      7. reboot

Once the Router Restarts, SSH should be working, and when you try to login, you will get a prompt to accept the new Key Generated by DropBear

Unable to copy files using windows 7 usb/dvd download tool

Sometimes if your USB stick has something in its MBR you might get the error
Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool error: We were unable to copy your files. Please check your USB device and the selected ISO file and try again.

You have to start command prompt as an Administrator (On Windows 7 that means right clicking the cmd and selecting Run as Administrator) and use the diskpart utility.

WARNING: Be careful to select the right drive or else your day won’t have a happy end because if you select the wrong drive you will lose all your data on this drive!

Instead of formatting the partition with FAT32, you can also use NTFS (like WUDT does), but then you need an extra step to make the drive bootable:

Bootsect.exe /nt60 X:

“X:” is the drive letter of your USB stick. Bootsect.exe can be found on the Windows 7 DVD in the boot folder. However, I can’t really recommend using NTFS. Some USB stick, at least, appeared to be slower with NTFS.

  1. Start command prompt as Administrator and type  diskpart
  2. type  list disk
  3. type select disk  and number of your USB disk ( like select disk 1 )
  4. type  clean
  5. type  create partition primary
  6. type  select partition 1
  7. type  active
  8. type  format quick fs=fat32
  9. type  assign
  10. type exit  to exit the diskpart utility
  11. type exit  to close command prompt

Solving “e-mail address already exists in this organization” using LDAP query in ADUC

Using the Windows 2003 Active Directory Users and Computers utility, right click on the domain, choose Find. In the Find: dropdown list, choose “Custom Search” and in the In: dropdown list, choose “Entire Directory”. Click the Advanced property page and enter the following LDAP query (in my example, at least):

proxyaddresses=smtp:user@domain.com

Click Find and you should find the object that already has that SMTP address.
